The next decision you will face is an important one: choosing a driving instructor.

With so many instructors advertising online and on social media, it can be difficult to know where to start, or how to tell who is genuinely qualified. This guide is designed to help you understand what to look for, what questions to ask, and how to make sure your lessons are safe, legal, and good value for money.

Check the Instructor’s Badge – This Is Essential

In the UK, anyone who teaches driving for payment must be approved by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) and must display an official instructor badge, clearly visible on the nearside of the car, during lessons.

There are only two badges you should ever see:

Fully qualified instructor’s badge (example)

Green Badge – Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)

A green badge means the instructor is a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor. To earn this badge, an instructor must:

Pass three rigorous DVSA exams (theory, driving ability, and instructional ability)
Undergo criminal record checks
Be regularly assessed to ensure teaching standards are maintained

If you want the reassurance of a fully qualified professional, a green badge is what you are looking for.

Trainee driving instructor’s badge (example)

Pink Badge – Trainee Driving Instructor (PDI)

A pink badge indicates a trainee instructor, also known as a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor). These instructors are still completing their training and gaining experience.

Trainee instructors are allowed to charge for lessons only while displaying a valid pink badge, and only for a limited period.

Many PDIs are excellent, enthusiastic teachers – but it is important that you are aware they are still in training, and that the badge is valid and clearly displayed.

No Badge on Display? Walk Away

If an instructor is charging for lessons and does not display a green or pink badge, they are teaching illegally. This can invalidate insurance and puts you at risk. Always check before your first lesson begins.

Ask About Experience and Teaching Style

Qualifications matter, but so does the way an instructor teaches. Everyone learns differently, especially in the early stages.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask:

How long have you been instructing?
Do you specialise in nervous or beginner drivers?
How do you structure lessons for brand-new learners?

A good instructor will welcome these questions and explain their approach clearly and calmly.

Look for Patience, Professionalism, and Structure

Learning to drive can feel overwhelming at first. Your instructor should:

Be patient and supportive

Explain things clearly, without rushing or pressure

Have a structured plan, rather than just “driving around”

Progress should be measured and purposeful, building confidence as well as skill.

Beware of Unrealistic Promises

Be cautious of claims such as:

“Guaranteed pass”
“Pass in just a few hours”
“No test nerves ever”

Everyone learns at a different pace. An honest instructor will focus on making you safe, confident, and test-ready, not on making unrealistic guarantees.

Local Knowledge Makes a Difference

An instructor who knows the local area well can:

Teach you on realistic roads and junctions

Prepare you for common local test routes

Help you feel confident driving independently, not just on test day

This is especially valuable for learners who are brand new to driving.

What to Do If You Suspect an Instructor Is Teaching Illegally

If something does not feel right – for example, there is no badge on display, the badge looks out of date, or the instructor becomes evasive when you ask about it – your safety should always come first.

Here are sensible steps to take:

Do not challenge the instructor during the lesson. Calling someone out in person can feel uncomfortable and, in rare cases, may put you at risk. It is better to stay calm and end the lesson politely.

Do not book further lessons until you have clarity.

Make a note of details such as the instructor’s name, the vehicle registration, where the lessons took place, and what raised your concerns.

Check the DVSA online register of approved driving instructors. This allows you to confirm whether someone is a registered ADI.

Report concerns to the DVSA if you believe someone is charging for lessons without the correct approval. This helps protect other learners as well as yourself.

If you are unsure, you can also seek advice from another qualified instructor or driving school before taking any further lessons.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right driving instructor is about more than price or availability. It is about safety, trust, and quality of instruction.

At the very minimum, always check the instructor’s badge. From there, look for someone who is qualified, patient, professional, and genuinely invested in helping you become a safe and confident driver for life – not just someone who gets you through a test.

If you would like to learn more about how lessons are structured at Tayton Driver Training, or to check current availability, please feel free to get in touch. We are always happy to answer questions from new learners and their families.

Safe driving starts with the right instruction.

If you have just applied for your provisional driving licence, congratulations – it is an exciting first step towards independence.
